PRESS RELEASE
Hello Band Families,
Bravo! This exclamation is recognized in all of the major arts centers around the world. From New York to Paris, through Vienna to Budapest and beyond, Bravo! is the highest praise one can achieve for outstanding artistic endeavor.
This past Saturday, 142 Reynolds Band students earned seven exclamations of “Bravo!” from Head Adjudicator Lou Ranger at the Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival in Port Alberni.
Mr. Ranger is professor of Trumpet at the University of Victoria and the Aspen Summer Academy in Aspen, Colorado. He is a former Co-Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and a former member of the American Brass Quintet. He has performed all over North America and Europe.
Joining him was Ralph Ford, Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Troy University in Panama City, Florida. Mr. Ford has been the conductor of the Troy Symphony Band and Chamber Winds, Jazz Ensemble I, and the director of the nationally renowned "Sound of the South" Marching Band. He is the Chairman of the Board for the Southeastern United States High School and Middle School Concert Band Clinic and Honor Bands, and a member of the Board of Directors for the National Band Association's Hall of Fame of Distinguished Conductors.
Finally, but no less distinguished, was the third adjudicator, Mr. Brian Stovell. Mr. Stovell is one of the Chairmen for MusicFest Canada, Canada’s National Band Festival. Mr. Stovell has had a long and illustrious career as an educator that has included teaching many now successful and famous musicians, including Diana Krall.
The Vancouver Island Music Festival is a regional festival for MusicFest Canada, and it is from this regional festival that school groups receive recommendations to perform at the prestigious national event. This year the Nationals are being held in Ottawa, ON.
The results for the performing Reynolds students were truly amazing. The adjudicators use a set of 42 criteria to judge the musical ensembles. These criteria are rated on a five-point scale from Poor to Superior; based upon these criteria, the group is given an overall rating.
The Reynolds “Blue Band”, made up of grade 11 and 12 students,
received ratings of “Superior” on all but two of the criteria
where they received ratings of “Excellent” in the difficulty
level B500. (B600 is College level) In my 25-year career, I have never
had a band receive ratings that high.
The Reynolds ”Green Band”, made up of Grade 9 and 10 students,
also received very high ratings and received the overall rating of “Superior”
in the B300 level.
Both bands were recommended to represent Vancouver Island at the Nationals.
The school, the city, Reynolds families and especially the band students should be extremely proud of the work these young people did this weekend. I know I am.
BRAVO!
Mr. David Flello
